I’m sure there are still plenty of people who don’t download their music from the internet…my husband would be one of them. He has been on a continuous streak of buying CD’s since the late 80’s and has no plans of slowing down any time soon.
After years of storing CD’s on smaller CD racks scattered around the house, the planning began with this one wall behind the door in his music room. We couldn’t think of a better way to use this wasted space.
Our plans began with measuring and drawing out our design…although I’ll spare you the details of our horrible artwork. We purchased boards that were 6in. wide (really 5 1/2 ish) since it is the perfect fit for CD’s. Lowe’s cut all of the pieces for us when we purchased them…but I bought a miter saw shortly after completing this project!
Removing the trim from the wall was easy. We set that piece aside to be added to the bottom of the storage unit so it would have that built-in look.
We measured 5 1/2 inches between shelves since the average CD case is just about 5 in. This gave us a little room for cases that were a little larger, but also gave us the room to fit in as many shelves as possible…twelve to be exact (not including the top). After marking off where we wanted each shelf, we drilled holes to mark the places where the screws would be set. The #8, 2 in. screws worked well to secure the boards without splitting them. And the level…well, it’s self-explanatory.
Once we put it all together, we filled one shelf with CD’s to test it out, and it wasn’t quite as strong in the middle. We added 1/4 in. board to the back to keep the shelves more sturdy.
The unit was completed with decorative trim at the top and the baseboard trim at the bottom…along with a coat of paint. I used Benjamin Moore’s Super Spec in black, which gave it a nice finish and was very easy to work with. We added brackets to the top of the piece and secured them to the wall. We spent less than $150.00 on materials, which is really inexpensive for a unit that holds close to 1800 CD’s. It is nice to finally have all of our CD’s in one place!
