Hello, I’m Karla! I have been on a mission fixing up our 60’s brick ranch home, one DIY project at a time! I enjoy featuring affordable do-it-yourself projects, gardening, decorating ideas, and some local places here in Virginia.
My husband and I purchased an older home several years ago that needed A LOT of work. I fell in love with the house right away because I saw the potential and the good, solid structure it had. My husband didn’t fall in love with it when he saw all the work that needed to be done. It was very overwhelming but we knew it would be a great house for our family and had it not needed all the repairs, it would have been out of our price range. So we took a chance on it and have completed many projects along the way. For the first few years we focused on the maintenance side of things which included new windows, replacing an entire bathroom, and tearing out and waterproofing the basement before refinishing it, just to name a few. Obviously, we didn’t do all that ourselves but we did what we were able to…and all of it was done on a very tight budget.
Over the last few years, we have finally been able to focus more on the cosmetic side of things as we have slowly been remodeling and decorating. We painted and decorated when we moved in but it was more about what was necessary since the maintenance projects needed to be finished and because our children were so little at the time. Now we are at a point where we can do more of the cosmetic/DIY projects, when we have time and can afford it.
The purpose of my blog is to feature projects that will encourage you to do your own DIY projects! I feel like there are many people out there like me who like to learn and take on their own projects because there is satisfaction in doing it yourself and it saves so much money! I am not one who has a lot of money to drop on a makeover all at once. I try to do a little at a time within a set budget. The same goes for the furniture I refinish. I would much rather buy an older furniture piece and update it myself.
I also have a little 20 x 15 garden space and since I have only been gardening now for the last ten years, I enjoy connecting with other gardeners so I can learn from them. If you are a gardener I would love for you to share your tips and ideas with me!
Thanks for stopping by here at Small Town Rambler! I hope you find some ideas and inspiration on the blog to start your own DIY/home improvement project!
