Several years ago when we moved from a townhouse into our current home, we gained so much more living space and a yard for the kids to play in. Although we have more room in this house, we have half the closet space in the master bedroom than we had before. Our previous house had two closets in the master bedroom which gave us room to spread out. Since then, we have thought of many different ways to maximize our closet space while we have been squeezing everything into it.
We had one bar across the length of the closet and two shelves at the top. It also had built in shelves on the left side of the closet which I first used to store shoes among other things, but really it just seemed to be wasted space considering there wasn’t much room for our clothes.
I began looking into closet systems a few months ago and after looking into several different ones, I decided to go with the Martha Stewart Espresso Deluxe Starter Closet Kit at Home Depot. I liked that it secured to the wall and that you can customize it with additional pieces they have available. This system also has additions for larger closets or laundry rooms.
First, we had to remove all the built-in pieces that were in the closet….which of course was followed by repairing the walls and painting. We painted the walls using Benjamin Moore’s Cape Hatteras Sand, that we had left over from our living room project.
The closet system includes the track that is secured to the wall. Once we measured and decided how high we wanted the system placed, we made sure it was level and marked where we wanted to hang the shelves by using painters tape.
Once we installed it we placed our shelves where we wanted and added the shoe shelves (3 pack) and the hamper with a removable canvas bag, which easily extends out.
We also added the sliding belt/tie rack…
We have been very happy with our closet system. It has provided us with so much more storage and I like that it is off of the floor since it doesn’t trap dust and dirt. Just a reminder though, to those who have long dresses or robes, you might consider leaving the bar out of the bottom in one section of the closet system so that you have room to hang them. Be sure to measure carefully before you decide on a specific system since there are different ones to choose from depending on your space.
