All of my Grandparents inspired my love for DIY and decorating in one way or another, but if I could point to one as the most inspiring decorator, it would definitely be my Great-Grandmother. Her home was lovely and her decor would still capture attention even today with a mix of mid century and traditional style. One thing I remember is how she so beautifully decorated with books. She always had books on shelves and tables around the house like a mini-library, with novels and books on art, travel, and history. I remember looking at her books with so many fascinating photographs and they were often a conversation piece.
I think of her sometimes when I pick up a book on a nearby coffee table to get style ideas for my own home and I love that they add to the decor.
I’m sure you noticed the stickers on one of the books? That was a library find that I just loved and had to include in this round up. I was so glad to find it and it will be in my home soon enough, though I’m glad our local library has such nice decorating books to check out!
You may have seen these books in my photos here on the blog sitting beneath a flower vase or standing upright with a nice decorative accent holding them up. What I love most about the books that I have, are that they inspire all skill levels and budgets! There are so many ideas and these books are affordable…
Flea Market Style was a recent find at Books-A-Million and thanks to my love for thrift store finds and eclectic style, the cover and title caught my eye right away! This book is perfect for those flea market finds and features styles such as Bohemian and Modern. The book even has a section of clever projects you can try yourself. One in particular that stood out to me was a broken table cut down and attached to a wall as a space-saving work station! This book has so many wonderful ideas for a mix of decor and I especially love the kitchen decorating ideas, with eclectic furniture and colorful dishes!
Yes, another Better Homes and Gardens paperback book- I’m always drawn to these colorful and affordable books! New Cottage Style is full of color and features more elegant styles but has something for everyone. I particularly love the painted furniture pieces and the outdoor spaces that’ll make you want to spruce up your front porch. I really loved the photo of the beds on the screened-in porch with a ceiling fan…because, I wish I had a space like that! I have seen this book everywhere and there is a very good reason it is so popular. I’d say this book is a must-have for your coffee table decor and style inspiration!
Since you’re here reading about DIY/ Home Decor books, I’m pretty sure you recognize the folks on the cover of this book! I had the pleasure of meeting John and Sherry Petersik of Young House Love in Richmond last year when they were doing a live interview with NPR to benefit a local non-profit organization. That is where I purchased my copy of Lovable Livable Home and even had it signed! I have enjoyed this book and so have a few of our guests since it’s within reach on our coffee table! It’s filled with ideas, from makeovers that change the look of an entire room to fun and simple DIY projects that really stand out. A few of my favorites include the fun ideas for kid’s spaces, using Sharpie markers to create the look of wallpaper in a bathroom, and turning a family recipe into art. This book is perfect for any skill level and has ideas to turn to for projects that require planning or projects you can put together in a day!
And here is my recent library find that will be in my home VERY SOON! The cover of Branches & Blooms was enough to get my attention on the shelf at our local library and I just have to have one for myself. Floral craft is something I still haven’t mastered- well, “mastered” is setting it a little high, I struggle just to cut the Kroger manager’s special bouquets to the right length before placing them in the vase. Branches & Blooms is just what I need to create the perfect floral designs! I especially loved the centerpieces featured in this book because my table decor can be pretty plain sometimes and now that we have a 9 ft. farmhouse table I’m ready to start dressing it up, especially when I’m entertaining.
From baby showers to birthdays, cake to confetti, Celebrate Everything! has it all! I love entertaining but I don’t always have the creative ideas to pull off the unique and personalized details and this book is giving me so many ideas. I just purchase this recently and I can’t put it down! There are so many details for decorating, including table decor, personalized party favors, and games. I especially loved the idea for the printed family photo party hats and the doughnut pool!! You can get a peek at Darcy’s doughnut pool on Instagram. This book is a must-have whether you’re a pro at party planning or need help with ideas like I do.
Another book for those with different skill levels, Do It Yourself: DIY Ideas has something for those who have experience with DIY projects or for anyone still waiting to take that leap and do it yourself! This book will inspire you to get started and has so many colorful ideas…you might want to have the paint brush ready! I love the furniture makeovers, crafts storage ideas, and the small details, like painting pattern on a lamp shade. This book shows you how to paint anything from fabric, metal, and ceramic and will encourage you to get started on your next project!
I hope you enjoyed this list and will consider these fun reads for your decorating and DIY projects! They also add to the decor as they have such fun covers and beautiful content! I have enjoyed looking at them with our guests as well…they sure are nice for conversation!
Sadly, I had to return the Branches & Blooms book to the library but I will have it soon enough and give those floral arrangements a try! Until then, I’ll have plenty of inspiration and projects to tackle thanks to these books that so beautifully style my coffee table!
