Soon after the birth of our first child in 2003, we purchased this hunter green living room set. At the time, we wanted dark living room furniture so that spots and stains weren’t as noticeable.
As you can see, our living room includes a dining room area as well. I had my Grandparents old dining room table in there but it needs a lot of repair work, especially the chairs.
As much as I would love to have new living room furniture, it’s just not in our budget right now. I knew I wanted a darker color on the walls with white furniture that would stand out. If we were going to get white sofa’s, I definitely wanted removable covers so I could wash them. I decided to look into slipcovers but I didn’t want one big cloth to drape over the sofa that would move around a lot. I found these Sure Fit Twill Supreme 2-Piece Sofa Slipcovers that I thought would fit my furniture. As soon as I tried out the slipcovers to make sure they would fit, I painted the walls with Benjamin Moore’s Cape Hatteras Sand.
I am really happy with how things are coming together. The slipcovers wash well and I use a hand-held steamer to get the wrinkles out after fitting them back onto the furniture. I rearranged the sofa’s and the chair and moved my buffet underneath the window. My husband had a large rug in his old house that had been rolled up in our storage room for several years. We had it cleaned and bought a new lamp and some pillows from Pier 1 that had some of the same colors on the rug. The pattern is busy, but I have always liked the colors…and I didn’t have to purchase a new one!
This is how everything is coming together so far…
I have stored the old dining room table, and hopefully will repair and refinish it one day. My Mom was kind enough to give me her dining table since she was replacing hers. It’s certainly more sturdy that the other one.
If you are interested in slipcovers, be sure to measure carefully before purchasing or keep your receipt handy in case you need to return it. Pay attention especially to the style of furniture the slipcover is made for. (ex: arms, cushions, etc.)
I still have a lot of work left before our living room is complete. To be continued…..
